Little Sparkles Nursery

Date: November 2013

Little Sparkles Nursery in Preston provides a high standard of individual and group care for children. Opening in 2011, it has a strong commitment to community by offering excellent care and education. The nursery previously had a large baron space that was used for over-flow parking and storage, but was unsightly compared to the modern buildings in the area. Batted timber fencing with barbed wire and unattractive brick walls gave no space for their outdoor space.

After coming to us with a brief to turn the area in to a play space that children could use to aid their education, a design was proposed that created a bright and colourful space making use of ivy screened security fencing and multi coloured bow top fencing. With an aim to make the area as natural as possible, artificial grass provided the main surfacing with a textured pathway guiding children through the playground. A new product, the timber bridge, was developed, with an Otter Play Unit giving a physical and exhilarating challenge. The rear of the playground hosts a sensory area with stepped planters and storage shed. Shade was provided by a triple sail shade and a timber canopy. Closer to the main nursery buildings a small steel canopy was installed.

The 45 children at Little Sparkles Nursery now have a fun space to play and learn in, supplementing the internal teaching environment. Being so close to the car park, it help attract prospective parents to the nursery too, adding a wow factor that other nurseries may not have.
