The Pilot Boat Inn

The existing play area at the Pilot Boat Inn, Anglesey lacked play value and good quality equipment. The ground was uneven, unsafe and the space was in need of a serious update. The pub owners got in touch with us for our help. They knew they wanted something on the WOW factor scale to massively improve the beer garden, and to encourage children to play within the view of adults whilst visiting for some food and drinks. Fitting in with the pub’s name ‘the Pilot Boat’, the design had to be nautical themed, right?! So that could only mean one thing…a PIRATE SHIP climber.

In the month of June in 2019, our newest Play Ship officially docked just in time for all the children to enjoy in the upcoming summer months. The final design was a multi-level Play Ship with ground, low, mid and upper height areas, filled with a numerous features to step, climb, and slide around.

Firstly, at the stern of the ship is a set of timber steps, and rock and rope ramps to help traverse up onto the 0.9m high platform. From this it steps up onto the 1.5m high platform, this being the most open spacious place on the ship ideal for socialising and looking down back onto the pub and views. Features such as a mast with sails and a ships wheel are also located here to add to the feel of a thrilling adventure.

On from this, the bow of the ship the is 1.2m high from ground level. Off this comes a scramble net for access and a colourful HDPE slide for exit. Underneath the middle platform is an under deck area which provides an enclosed area to sit and relax with friends, where there is a bench and a weather panel for some imaginative, creative play. Although mainly timber, several colourful HDPE panels and blue Wet pour Surfacing that symbioses water helps to brighten up the entire playground.  Overall this transformation has made a huge difference to the space and pub as a whole and everyone is over the moon with the final outcome.
