Richmond Park is a focal point for the Burscough community with a wide range of leisure activities including sports and older age playground equipment in place. West Lancashire Borough Council identified the need to expand these facilities by installing a complimenting playground for the 5-8 year old child age range.

Local children chose Playsound’s design from a number of proposals which incorporated a bespoke 6m long HSM Victory with more traditional play elements, including swings, a see-saw and springys, all within an enclosed fenced area. With heavy use due to the park being at the centre of the community, it was vital that the equipment was robust. Steel was chose as the framework for every item, including the HMS Victory.

The play ship consisted of a number of play elements. Firstly, at the bow was an internal climbing rock wall for children to traverse around. Access to the lower central deck is by either a rope scramble net or a rock and rope climber. This then leads to a raised stern of the ship, from where children can exit via an exciting tube slide. Underneath the rear platform an under deck area provides an area to sit and relax with friends. Although mainly timber, colourful HDPE panels brighten up the entire playground. Additional features such as a mast with sails and Jolly Roger flag as well as a ships wheel add to the feel of it being a thrilling wooden ships.

Since the installation the play area has seen large numbers of children making use of the new facilities, providing a fun space for younger children to enjoy.
